History, Culture and Contested Memories: Global and Local Perspectives.

The Winter Institute is an annual collaboration between ANU, New York University / Peking University, and the University of Tokyo. 2019 will mark the fourth annual Winter Institute and the first time the Winter Institute will be held in the Southern Hemisphere during the Australian summer. Call for Papers

In Toward Creation of a New World History (first published in Japanese in 2011) HANEDA Masashi writes: ‘to have a sense of belonging to the earth means that people the world over, who already have a sense of belonging to multiple groups of people, must add a new identity to their self-perception’. Following BREXIT and the spread of nationalist sentiment in continental Europe as well as the increasingly isolationist politics underpinning the US agenda under President Trump this sense of ‘belonging to the earth’ seems less not more within reach. The turn to nationalism is inevitably recalibrating attitudes to history, culture and memory from both global and local perspectives and it is undoubtedly impacting upon scholarship across the disciplines. The contributors to this ‘Winter Institute’ will draw on their work to reflect on the critical issues confronting scholars today, which will give us an opportunity to discuss common responses, both intellectual and political. Contributions can be interdisciplinary, theoretical, discipline-based, subject-based, text-based, or case studies. We hope to attract participants from a broad range of disciplines and perspectives across the humanities, arts and social sciences.

Senior academics and mid- and early career researchers will present lectures and papers and graduate students will be expected to give shorter presentations based on their work. Participants will nominate readings, which will be circulated prior to the workshop.
