The 10th Australia-China Transcultural Studies Symposium & The 9th Foundation for Australian Studies in China Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Institute for Australian and Chinese Arts and Culture (IAC) at Western Sydney University and the Foundation for Australian Studies in China (FASIC) along with the Beijing Foreign Studies University are announcing that for the first time the above mentioned two international conferences will be held back to back from 3 October to 6 October 2024, at Western Sydney University, Australia, with the joint Reception on 3 October and conference dinner on 6 October.

Participants can choose to attend both conferences, or either of the two. Those who wish to present papers can decide to present at both conferences, or either of the two. To present at both conferences, two different abstracts addressing each conference’s theme will be required.

The 10th Australia-China Transcultural Studies Symposium: Past. Present. Future.

Dates: 3 – 4 October 2024

The China-Australia/Australia-China Transcultural Studies Symposium (CATS/ACTS) was a joint initiative of Beijing Foreign Studies University and the University of Adelaide in 2013. Inaugural participants included Professor Sun Youzhong of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Emeritus Professor Nicholas Jose of Adelaide University, Emeritus Professor Gregory McCarthy and Associate Professor Xianlin Song of the University of Western Australia among others. The previous nine symposiums have been held in Beijing, Adelaide and Perth, with the 9th being held in Beijing in 2023, co-organised with Western Sydney University.

The 10th symposium will focus on all aspects of transcultural exchanges between Australia and China in the past, through to the present, and onward looking to the future. Topics of presentations concerned with but not limited to the following aspects of transcultural studies are welcome: education; literature; language; arts; history; translation; cultural relations and diplomacy; philosophy; tourism. Impacts of AI on transcultural studies and exchanges will also be one of the focal points of the Symposium. Researchers, academics, experts in relevant fields and research students are all encouraged to participate and present.

The 9th Foundation for Australian Studies in China Conference 

Dates: 5 – 6 October 2024

The FASIC conference is an annual academic conference initiated in 2013 by Emeritus Professor David Walker AM, FASIC’s inaugural BHP Chair of Australian Studies at Peking University. The conference aims to discuss current research, reflect on recent Australia-China engagement achievements, and identify opportunities for the further development of knowledge ties. The first seven FASIC conferences were held in China in collaboration with different host universities, and the last one was held online.

The 9th FASIC conference (FASIC 9) is the first FASIC conference to be held in Australia, focusing on Australia-China Ties: Education and Innovation. Topics of presentations concerned with but not limited to the following aspects are welcome: Australian studies; indigenous studies; education and research collaborations; research knowledge production and circulation; educational achievements, barriers and transformative innovations in teaching and research. Emerging scholars are encouraged to participate in the poster presentation session of FASIC 9.

SUBMISSION DATE

Once the completed form is received and accepted, a joint invitation letter will be issued for visa application and travel request with your organisation.

REGISTRATION FEES
AU$200 for attending both conferences. AU$120 for attending one conference. For students, fees will be halved. Lunches and tea breaks are included in the registration fees.

PUBLICATION
Quality papers from both conferences will be selected for a book publication. Long-form proposals will be called for at the time of the conferences.
