
Dr Emma Mak is a UK and Australia registered music therapist, a special educator, a theologian, and a Black Belt 7 Dan Taekwondo master and International Referee. Dr Mak was born and raised in Hong Kong. She was educated in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Hong Kong. Dr Mak holds a Bachelor and Master of Science, a Postgraduate Certificate in Special Education, a Master of Music Therapy, and a Doctor of Worship Studies. She founded her music therapy centre in 2008 and has 15 years of front-line music therapy experience serving people with psychological and developmental issues. She gained interest in Christian worship studies, especially in how the Church can adapt to the needs of marginalized populations (e.g., people living with mental illness, SEN, dementia) in achieving worshipping together. In 2018, Dr Mak was awarded the Borchert Prize for Worship Research. Her doctoral thesis integrates elements of music therapy into the pastoral care of marginalized older adults. In recent years, Dr Mak has been collaborating with the Hong Kong Polytechnique University in music therapy, special education, sports, and Taekwondo research. Dr Mak is currently a Master of Counselling student at the University of Notre Dame, Australia.
