Yangbeiyao Yu
Australian National University

Yangbeiyao is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Asian and Pacific Studies at The Australian National University. Originally from Wuhan, Hubei, she completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Her research interests focus on identity construction and cultural memory in Chinese immigrants, particularly the emotional experiences, intergenerational relationships, and public expressions of Generation Z Chinese immigrants in Australia and other Asia-Pacific regions. Yangbeiyao is interested in how younger generations of immigrants reconstruct their sense of belonging in cross-cultural environments and explore aspirations between dispersion and connection. Her Master’s thesis examines the re-narrative of the Robe Landing in the Chinese-Australian community, exploring how this historical event is reinterpreted in response to mainstream national narratives. She is excited to engage with fellow scholars and exchange ideas on the future of China-Australia relations. She hopes to inspire and be inspired through interdisciplinary dialogues during the Stephen FitzGerald Scholars Program.
