Dear Australian Studies Institute Friends and Colleagues,
We've just published our last bulletin for 2019 - it's a bumper edition and is available here»
Here at the Institute, our team is reflecting on what we think was an exceptionally productive and exciting year. We’ve continued to develop ways to promote global engagement and to consolidate partnerships with those committed to promoting a better understanding of Australia, wherever they are. We are delighted to share with you some of our highlights:
Our flagship events, including our First Eight Project lecture (London) and annual ‘Australia and the World’ lecture (Canberra), were delivered to sold-out audiences. We partnered with the Hon Ros Kelly AO and PwC Australia to establish the Inspiring Women Reflect series in Australia, and we’ve got exciting plans to continue building these programs in 2020.
We’ve generated national and global conversations by creating a new ANU tradition with our program of Visiting Fellows dinners. Over the past year we have hosted almost 450 attendees – bringing together Visiting Fellows from all over the world and members of the ANU community to talk about the big issues of the day. We also established a number of Fellowships in 2019, and hosted two international trilateral Institutes at ANU. We’ve visited eight countries and numerous centres. If we haven’t visited yet, we hope to see you in 2020!
Our Senior Fellow, Mark Kenny’s podcast ‘Democracy Sausage with Mark Kenny’ recorded 37 episodes in 2019, reaching number 4 in the iTunes News podcasts chart with 75,000 downloads since its launch earlier this year. If you haven’t already tuned in, we can highly recommend it for some good holiday listening.
We produced 14 e-bulletins in 2019, with an average open rate of 42% (compared to the industry average of 18%). We’re averaging over 50,000 impressions per month on Twitter and are continuing to grow our social media audience.
We have an exciting program planned for 2020. We’re hitting the ground running with the next Winter Institute to be held at NYU in early January. Stay tuned.
Thank you for your support.
All the best for a safe and peaceful festive season.
Paul, Mark, Shirley, Fiona, Jemima and Xinyuan.
