Prof Peter Sloman
The ANU Australian Studies Institute (AuSI) is excited to introduce Prof Peter Sloman, our fellow in the 2025 Visiting Fellowship Program.
Prof Peter Sloman is a political historian based in the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) at the University of Cambridge. His interests range across modern history and contemporary politics, with particular interests in the British Liberal tradition, the impact of ideas on economic and social policy, and the debate over universal basic income.
Peter has been visiting ANU in October and November 2025 to carry out research on how Australian political parties develop tax and spending proposals and the impact of the Parliamentary Budget Office on election costings. He has been working on party archives at the National Library of Australia, carrying out interviews with policy-makers and journalists, and presenting work-in-progress at conferences in Canberra and Melbourne.
“The visiting fellowship at the ANU Australian Studies Institute has been a great opportunity for me to extend my research beyond the UK and to understand how Australia's distinctive political institutions shape parties' and voters' behaviour. I'm really grateful for the chance to use the facilities at ANU and to learn from leading researchers in political science and other fields: it has been an ideal base for carrying out research in the nation’s capital.”
