Dr Anton Moiseienko returns from International Fellowship

Late last year, Dr Anton Moiseienko, Senior Lecturer in Law at The Australian National University (ANU), completed his International Fellowship at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). The six-week fellowship was the result of a collaboration between the ANU Australian Studies Institute (AuSI) and UT Austin’s Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies.

The International Fellowship enabled Anton to continue his comparative work on financial crime and economic sanctions, including through conducting interviews for his upcoming book on anti-money laundering regulation provisionally entitled Doing Business with Criminals. Anton combined his fellowship in Austin with a week-long trip to Washington, DC to present the results of his research on the impact of targeted sanctions at an event alongside speakers from the US State Department and Human Rights First.

“Austin is a leading centre for the study of national security, and I therefore had unrivalled opportunities for engaging with colleagues working across areas close to my own interests. Academics at UT Austin conduct ground-breaking empirical research on global compliance with financial crime standards, withdrawal of companies from sanctioned jurisdictions, and humanitarian exemptions to sanctions programs, to name but a few topics of interest. It was fantastic to establish contact, and there will no doubt be opportunities for future collaboration.

“I would like to thank especially Dr Rhonda Evans, the Director of the Clark Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies, for the warm welcome and many introductions made while I was in Austin. I was also privileged to engage with academics at two national security research groups based at UT Austin, the Clements Center and the Strauss Center. The support provided by their respective Directors, Dr Paul Edgar and Dr Adam Klein, has likewise been instrumental to the success of the fellowship.

“The opportunity to combine the fellowship with a trip to Washington, DC to engage with practitioners and policymakers, including those in the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control and the State Department, was also immensely valuable. It is always rewarding to discuss one’s research with those whose work it is ultimately intended to support.”
