Stephen Fitzgerald Scholars Program in its second year

The Stephen FitzGerald Scholars Program is a prestigious and unique national program that brings selected Chinese students to the capital for an immersive and rewarding three-day tour. Funded by the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations (NFACR), an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the program fosters strong and lasting links and cooperation between the two countries through the next generation of Chinese leaders.

This exciting three-day program is being offered from 20-22 November 2024 and will bring together 30 Chinese scholars from Australian universities. All Australian universities are encouraged to nominate up to three students for selection. All costs of travel, transfers, meals and accommodation are funded by the program.

Now in its second year, this unique opportunity has become a valued part of the Australian experience for those who gain selection. It promotes connections between Australia and China, and builds understanding and exchange between the two countries. The inaugural cohort had 30 Chinese scholars from 20 Australian universities. Their experiences are shared below.Benefits of the program include:

  • All expenses-paid trip to Canberra (from anywhere in Australia) to participate in the Stephen FitzGerald Scholars Program from 20-22 November 2024. 
  • Unique inside access to the great institutions of Australian nationhood, from Parliament House, the High Court of Australia and the National Press Club, to the cultural and scientific organisations such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Museum of Australia and CSIRO. Scholars will have contact with senior government, parliamentary, legal, cultural and scientific leaders.
  • Scholars will become Stephen FitzGerald alumni and be part of a select alumni network of next generation Chinese leaders.

From a special briefing by The Hon Milton Dick MP at the Speaker's Courtyard to witnessing the inner workings of Parliament during Question Time, the visit to Parliament House and the Old Parliament House, and Lunch and Address at the National Press Club, these special events provided an extraordinary, up-close view of the political machinery in action, left a lasting impression on my understanding of the political landscape.
