Beyond Identity Politics: Global Challenges and Humanistic Responses

The Winter Institute is an annual collaboration between ANU, New York University / Peking University, and the University of Tokyo. 2020 will mark the fifth annual Winter Institute with New York University the host. 


Call for Papers

The General Theme for the coming Institute is: "Beyond Identity Politics: Global Challenges and the Humanistic Responses". The sub-themes are:

A. Identities and Their Discontents: Rethinking Political Ontology of Human Groupings in the Post-Globalization Era;

B. Necessities and Limits of Minorian Identities vis-a-vis National and Global Trends

C. Literary Humanities and the Shaping of Emergent Identities

D. Universalism as Utopia and Ideology

E. Geopolitical and Cultural Reconfigurations and Critical Asian/Area Studies

The Australian Studies Institute will cover the cost of flights and the host institution (NYU) will provide accommodation and meals.

Attendees will be expected to give a presentation in response to the theme of the conference as it relates to their own work. Previous Institutes have brought together scholars from a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds. Academic staff presentations will be 30-40 minutes; PhD students 20-30 minutes.

There are six places comprising a mix PhD students and members of the academic staff. All are welcome to apply but preference will be given to early- and mid-career researchers.

  • Short response to the theme and a title of the proposed presentation you will give
  • A link to your ANU researcher page or a short CV
  • You will need to indicate that you have the approval of your supervisor (for both graduate students and academic staff)
